Seneca Foods (SENEA) packs canned and frozen vegetables for store brands and its own labels.
June-quarter sales rose 36%, helped by its expanded frozen-vegetable business following the Green Giant acquisition. Reported profit rose 31% despite smaller inventory-accounting benefits. Its next quarterly update will test whether the larger business sustains earnings after the summer harvest.
With a market cap of approximately $1.1 billion, SENEA trades at approximately 9x trailing reported profit. Inventory-accounting credits and pension income helped earnings; crop costs, debt and seasonal cash needs remain risks.
Opinion: SENEA appears potentially undervalued if its expanded vegetable business sustains earnings and its next report shows the acquisition paying off.
